We currently have twenty three couple hounds. Not all of them are currently hunting: some are still in training. Six puppies arrived this past October and they are still learning. They will be hunting next year.
The hounds are cared for by the Huntsman and his helpers. The Potomac Hunt Huntsman is Steve Currey. He has been working with hounds for more than 30 years. He was with the Potomac Hunt as a Whipper-in for five years before he left to hunt with the Arapahoe Hunt in Colorado. A whipper-in assists the huntsman with the hounds. A whipper in, or whip, helps keep the hounds in a pack, retrieves any hounds that have strayed, helps read the terrain and keep hounds out of danger. Mr. Currey came back east to hunt our hounds in 2023. He lives right across from the kennels so he is always checking on the the hounds.
He teaches the hounds to stay in a pack, follow the rules and most of all to follow him. He carries a horn. Different horn blows mean different commands for the hounds. The hounds look up to the huntsman as their leader. Several hunt members assist Mr. Currey with the hounds in the field as volunteer whips.
Currently our top working, hounds are Memo, Countess, Krypton and Petal.
